Yesterday I went hunting for the 2nd State Record Winter Wren! I didn't have very high hopes, considering it's a tiny brown bird hanging out in massive brown bushes. It's a good thing I kept my expectations low, since I dipped on the bird. The 2 and a half hour trip in below freezing temperatures was well worth it, however, if just to see these beautiful icicle formations! After reaching the spot of the Winter Wren sightings and searching forever, I spotted on the water my lifer Hooded Mergansers! After watching them for a while, I spotted something I couldn't believe was actually true - COMMON GOLDENEYES: After forever of searching, all I had to do was drive a few miles to the Snake River to see them. After watching them, I started seeing Common Goldeneyes everywhere, flying above, landing in the water, you name it. While using playback on the Winter Wren, a young Beaver swam from clear across the river towards me: And then a very photogenic Song Sparrow showed up to see what all the hubub was about: Even though I didn't see the historic Winter Wren, I did get 2 whole lifers and I'm very happy with that!
